At age 14, he left Dundee and attended Cordwalles Preparatory, in Pietermaritzburg for his Std. 6 year. He attended one guitar lesson, but decided to teach himself how to play instead. He worked mostly as a groundsman, maintaining the sports-fields and school grounds.
